Software

The construction of such a complex future-oriented platform requires many technical components and a strictly integrated implementation.

The 'Spil' (and ‘Persistent Spil’ database) is fed in two ways:
  • by delivery (in XML) from external collections through a control and conversion pipeline. Netkernel 1060 components are used for this purpose. Netkernel 1060 components are also used to prepare the 'Product' database (RDF triples) for navigation and publication.
  • the 'Persistent Spil', or central registration database for smaller collections is stored in an Oracle Berkeley DBXML. It is fed by direct input in the 'Erfgoedregister', for which the forms were developed with Orbeon Forms.
Images from external collections and images uploaded from the 'Erfgoedregister' are managed with Alfresco Enterprise and its underlying MySQL database.

Authority files, thesauri and ontologies are managed with Mondeca Intelligent Topic Manager within an Oracle RDBMS Standard Edition database.

Two components are used for the website:
  • Drupal (an open source WCMS) for managing the static content of the website. It uses a MySQL database and PHP scripting language.
  • Siderean Seamark for searching and navigating through the information in the 'Product' database. It uses a MySQL database.
The OAI-PMH repository is managed with the open source Repox software, developed in the European TELplus project

The system is supported on Intel-based hardware under Windows Server 2003 with various application servers such as Jboss and Tomcat

The architecture was designed and the system developed in collaboration with Amplexor in Holsbeek (B).
